For the vast majority of scans, yes you will need a referral. A referral from your health practitioner (i.e. GP or specialist) is important for a number of reasons:
a. A valid in-date referral from an appropriate health practitioner is required by Medicare in order for patients to be able obtain a rebate where one is available.
b. Your health practitioner will usually include important information on your referral, such as your current clinical symptoms and any medications you may be taking. This information assists us to provide you with the best medical care during your appointment.
c. If your health practitioner has given you a referral on difw stationery, it has a map and addresses of both our practices to help you find your way to us. difw referrals also have our telephone number and email address, as well as information for you about scan preparation.
However, in some circumstances a referral may not be strictly required. For example, some scans do not attract any rebate from Medicare. Also if you are not an Australian citizen, you will not be eligible for Medicare rebates if they are available. If you are unsure, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly Reception staff will be happy to assist you.
Yes, if the imaging you are having attracts a rebate from Medicare, the referral is valid for one imaging attendance only. Medicare also imposes time limits on validity of referrals. If you are not sure whether your referral is valid and within date for Medicare’s criteria, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly reception staff will be happy to assist you.
Yes, any referral for radiology services can be used to attend difw, providing the referral is within date and includes the referring doctor’s name, address and Provider Number. If you are not sure whether your referral is valid and within date for Medicare’s criteria, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly Reception staff will be happy to assist you.
No, there is no waiting list. Most requests for appointments can be accommodated within a few days, while emergency or clinically-urgent appointments can be accommodated either on the same day or within 24 hours.
Certain CT and x-ray services can be accommodated on a walk-in basis, with no formal appointment required.
Some scans have to be performed at a certain stage in pregnancy or at a certain time in the menstrual cycle. In these circumstances, your appointment may be delayed or booked well in advance to ensure your scan is performed at the medically-optimal time.
If you would like to know more about available appointments, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly Reception staff will be happy to assist you.
Yes. We are pleased to offer bulk-billing for x-ray and CT imaging, where Medicare rebates are available, patients are Medicare-eligible and Medicare referral criteria are met.
Ultrasound, mammography and intervention services (such as fine needle, core and vacuum biopsy, amniocentesis, CVS and fertility-investigations) cannot be bulk-billed due to the cost of providing these services and the low level of the rebates offered by Medicare. All of our services are performed on state-of-the-art equipment using the latest technology, by technical staff who are experienced specialists in their fields. Our radiology reports are individually dictated by fully qualified specialist radiologists and include both a formal review of imaging findings and recommendations for future management. These factors ensure that our radiology is of the highest medical standard however, unfortunately the costs associated with such high-quality imaging make bulk-billing these services commercially non-viable.
Bulk-billing also cannot be offered where Medicare does not provide a rebate at all for the particular service.
You will be given a verbal quote for your imaging when you make your appointment, including a guide as to the out-of-pocket component where applicable. The dollar value of Medicare rebates are set by Medicare Australia. If you have any questions regarding costs of our service, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly Reception staff will be happy to assist you.
Medicare provides rebates for some types of imaging in certain circumstances. Medicare imposes strict criteria of patient eligibility for imaging rebates, having regard to multiple factors including, but not limited to:
a. what your referring health practitioner has written on your referral (the clinical indications);
b. the frequency of your imaging review i.e. when you most recently had a scan of this type;
c. whether you are having multiple scans of contiguous anatomy (parts of the body that are close together) on the same day.
The criteria that govern whether you are eligible to receive a Medicare rebate can be viewed here by searching for the relevant Item Number applicable to your scan type. We make every effort to ensure you know whether you will receive a Medicare rebate at the time of booking your appointment, however sometimes this cannot be determined until after you are assessed clinically by medical and imaging staff on the day.
We strongly recommend that you discuss the matter of eligibility for Medicare rebates with your referring health practitioner and/or Medicare Australia on 132 011, if you require further information.
Private health insurance generally covers fees for medical imaging ONLY if you are admitted as a hospital in-patient at the time your imaging is performed. Please contact your private health insurer directly to enquire about your policy.
Your appointment time will vary depending on a number of factors. These include the type of imaging you are having, whether you are having multiple scans performed in the one appointment and whether something is found during your appointment which requires further investigation.
Our appointment-booking program contains prompts that ensure our Reception staff will advise you of the standard appointment time when you make your booking.
As a general rule:
• Patients for standard breast imaging ONLY (mammogram and breast ultrasound) should allow up to 2 hours;
• Patients for standard gynaecologic imaging ONLY should allow up to 1.5 hours;
Other types of imaging and/or combinations of the above imaging types may require more time with us and you will need to discuss this directly with Reception staff when you make your booking.
If you would like to know more about appointment times generally or to confirm how long you should allow for a specific appointment with us, please call us on 07) 3839 8666 and one of our friendly Reception staff will be happy to assist you.
It can be annoying to fill out personal information and clinical questionnaires every time you visit. However, we ask our patients to fill out a new clinical questionnaire each time because each individual visit is a new investigation for us. Medical errors arise most commonly when questions aren’t asked because assumptions are made instead. We make no assumptions about your symptoms, medication or past history. Having you provide your personal and clinical information to us fresh each time, is an important aspect of the diagnostic imaging process as it helps us safeguard against making an assumption about you, based on information we have from a previous visit. It also ensures you have the opportunity to tell us about anything new that’s concerning you or your doctor.
Patient care is our number one priority at difw. We try very hard to accommodate emergency or urgent imaging cases on the rare occasion they arise. We also tailor each appointment according to an individual patient’s clinical need and/or anatomical complexity. Occasionally, this causes us to run behind time. We ask for your patience while we attend to emergency cases or while we perhaps take a little longer with a patient who requires more time than is standard. It may be the case that one day, we provide emergency or extended care to you and in such circumstances, you would doubtless also appreciate the patience of others.
If you are particularly concerned about any potential delay with your appointment, we recommend contacting our friendly Reception staff just prior to your appointment time to out whether we are experiencing any delays before you arrive.
A Radiologist is a medical specialist, a fully qualified medical doctor who has completed a Fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR), in addition to their medical degree (MBBS).
A Radiologist is not a Radiographer, Breast Physician or General Practitioner.
difw has committed to providing the highest-quality medical imaging service in Brisbane for over 15 years. We are a small family business which means we are entirely privately-owned and operated, with no affiliation to any public health provider, not-for-profit or publicly-listed corporate health entity. We maintain a small scale of operation, which helps us to preserve the quality of imaging care we provide. We routinely bring the latest advances in imaging technology to Australian radiology practice, years ahead of our local competitors. We also set extremely high standards for our imaging staff in terms of scan protocols, with strict oversight of the imaging produced. Whilst we endeavour to ensure costs do not become prohibitive, as with any other service there is a direct correlation between cost and quality. The standard of equipment we invest in, the generous time allocated to our appointments for quality image acquisition and analysis, as well as the detail of our radiology reports, are all factors that combine to set difw apart from other private radiology services in Brisbane.
